In 1993, a brand new building was erected on Main Street in the center of downtown Buda. It was the shiny new penny of our then-small community; it was called the Basil Anthony Moreau Memorial Library, which is now known as the Buda Public Library.

This small white stone building next to the railroad tracks offered a limited variety of reading resources to its then remote community.

As the city of Buda began its growth period, we saw new buildings, new roads, and many new home developments. The influx of new families, new businesses and new city government created a city to equal other suburban cities that encompass Austin in central Texas. Yes, it changed the complexity of this once small town and its necessity to expand and grow.

But, let’s get back to that shiny penny on Main Street; the Public Library has remained as it was in 1993. Yet, it provides an increasing number of services to its members who exist throughout Buda and Hays County.

What would Buda do with a new library? The answer is simple; it would expand library services to support educational needs through the use of literature, provide expanded free public computer facilities, support additional civic and cultural organizations with larger meeting facilities, enhance and increase children’s programs, and provide an enlarged parking area.

If you look at comparable cities in central Texas, you’ll find extraordinary libraries which are not only libraries, but the center of that community’s wealth.
