A Kyle resident and World War II veteran says he’s outraged by the condition of the U.S. flag hanging outside the Kyle Post Office.

Arthur Hill, a member of the Kyle VFW, said he’s complained numerous times about the broken hooks anchoring the flag, leaving the stars and stripes hanging limply rather than flying proudly.

“They said they have to have a work order to take it down,” Hill said. “I wonder if the men and women defending that flag got a work order before they got killed.”

Hill says he’s complained four times to the post office and written a letter to the postmaster general in Washington. The post office employees called the police on Hill the last time he went in to complain, he said, though police officers did not arrest him.

Hill said he was stationed in Iceland and Northern Ireland during WWII, then landed in Normandy 10 days after the D-Day invasion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. During his time in Europe, his commanding officer and half of his platoon were killed, Hill said; he escaped with a bayonet wound. Today, he and his wife live with their daughter in Kyle.

Kyle Postmaster Carol Williams said the hooks that held up the flag occasionally break.

“We had a problem with the flag yesterday, but it’s straightened out today,” Williams said Tuesday.
When told that the flag was still mis-hung, Williams said the office would look into it.

As a fellow Postmaster, I’m ashamed to admit that I sometimes don’t pay enough attention on a daily basis to the condition of the flag hanging in front of my facility. However, I have many customers who do, and when one of them lets me or my staff know that there is an issue with the presentation or the condition of the flag it is taken care of BY US IMMEDIATELY. We DON’T call maintenance for this stuff unless there’s a problem at the top of the pole that we can’t fix.

This is the most contemptable outrage of government red tape we have ever witnessed in this country. Where has the pride gone. Did the Post Office employees raise the Flag? If so, They need to be terminated!

Sirs, Apparently Ms Williams does not go out the front door very often. It is difficult to see, other than looking the other way, that the symbol of our faith and our country is in poor condition. Perhaps if there was a bonus in fixing the problem, there would be faster action and interest.

    Robert..

Really? the MOST comtemptable outrage of government red tape?

    Really??

Fire the workers, yea that’s a great idea. Let’s disrupt the mail system for a few days. Very ignorant comment, partner.

    Mark…

Do you post a flag everyday in front of your house? Didn’t think so.

  • Jeff

I think the flags condition at the Post Office is a outward sign of the overall condition of our Federal Govenment these days.

    Well done Art!!

fire the employees? for what? the flag got loose after a windstorm. it needs to be fixed. it will. these complainers must lead perfect lives…and shame on the newspaper for covering this story so single-sidedly. who do you think delivers the hays free press to the homes?

  • this story is still on front page??

    amen Johansson.

Jeff, so what exactly do you think the overall condition is? Let’s see, you’ll probably complain a lot, then offer no solutions, then say lower taxes, without saying where the cuts should be, then say we should continue the wars, then complain about how government needs to get out of our lives, but at the same time complain about their response to the oil spill.

This is all you got Hays Free Press? A story on the state of the flag?

    Really?? Useless reporting, as usual.
