Special recognition goes to four young men at Buda Elementary School. These fourth graders attended the exclusive Boys’ Breakfast Book Club nearly every morning during the past school year. The club allowed the boys to get off their buses early, get their breakfasts from the school cafeteria and then read some exciting books with the campus reading teacher.

Author Andrew Clements’ Jake Drake, Know it All was the favorite of Taylor Tyner. He liked it because Jake was trying to win a computer and because the story was funny. The group also read Mary Pope Osborne’s Hour of the Olympics and an excerpt from Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory.

The most popular book was Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief. Rigo Gutierrez found this book to be adventurous and funny. Victor Resio liked the fact that there were a whole bunch of mythical creatures like the Minotaur and the Furies. The Lightning Thief was Marcus Reyna’s favorite because he found it thrilling and it “keeps you reading.”

The club members liked a variety a breakfast foods, as well. Taylor’s favorite was blueberry bagels with cream cheese. Marcus liked apple cinnamon muffins. Rigo liked cinnamon rolls and Victor preferred vanilla yogurt. Taylor liked the club because he got to get breakfast first. The others said they liked the fact that the club was “for boys only.” A good breakfast is the best way to start the day and if you add a good book, you’ve got a successful Boys’ Breakfast Book Club!
