Cameron Johnson led Texas State in scoring for the third straight game, as the senior forward netted a season-high 24 points in the Bobcats 79-68 win over Appalachian State in its second game of the ESPN Cancun Governor’s Cup at the Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico.
The Bobcats lost 83-72 to Ole Miss during their first game in the ESPN Cancun Governor’s Cup.
Against Appalachian State, Johnson also recorded eight rebounds, while Matt Staff scored a season-high 12 points and Ryan White added 10 points, six assists and four steals.
Texas State nailed 10 free throws in the last 4:23 seconds to come away with its first neutral-site victory of the season. It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Mountaineers started the second half on a 5-0 run, but Texas State would soon have an answer as it outscored Appalachian State 11-6 to take a 51-43 lead with 15 minutes left.
The Bobcats took a 10-point lead on a jumper by Bishop, and Staff’s layup increased the margin to 61-48 and Texas State cruised from there.
In the first half, Texas State was down 25-20 but went on a 7-0 run to take a 27-25 lead.
The Bobcats went on to end the first half on a 6-0 run which started with a pair of free throws by Staff, followed by a layup and dunk by Johnson and the Bobcats led Appalachian State 38-32 at the break.
Texas State went on to lose its final game of the ESPN Cancun Governor’s Cup 86-78 against Northeastern. Foul trouble in the second half doomed the Bobcats, who led 48-34 at halftime.
Texas State (4-9) will return home to Strahan Coliseum to host UT-Tyler on Dec. 31. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. This will be the second meeting between the two teams. Texas State beat UT-Tyler 84-71 last season.
