STAFF REPORTS
Saturn V, the Hays school district’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) magnet program at Pfluger Elementary and Carpenter Hill Elementary, is hosting parent informational meetings next week.
Carpenter Hill’s meeting is set for 6-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21 in the cafeteria. The Pfluger parent meeting is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in the Falcons’ cafeteria.
An overview of the program’s goals and admission procedures will be discussed.
Ellen Lyon, the program’s coordinator, said Saturn V’s curriculum “centers on strong literacy skills while building students’ understanding of rigorous content in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”
Students from all over Hays CISD may apply to participate. Enrollment is open to students from within the two hosting schools’ attendance zones as well as students who would normally go to other district elementary schools.
This spring’s upcoming process for admission will include a completed application form and satisfactory performance on a qualifying exam. Lyon indicates exam dates have been scheduled for Saturday, March 26 and Saturday, April 2. Student applications for the Saturn V Program will be available at each of the parent information meetings.
Projections for next school year include the Saturn V Program again having 44 open seats for fourth grade at Pfluger and 44 open fourth grade seats at Carpenter Hill. Fifteen fifth-grade seats are anticipated at Pfluger and four fifth-grade open seats at Carpenter Hill.
