MORGAN

When his own father allegedly threw him into a TV screen last March, 3-year-old Tristan Morgan needed 10 stitches to close a gash on his forehead, court records show.

More questions arose later the same month when the boy broke his arm under suspicious circumstances. The accounts of continued abuse led to Tristan’s removal from his home this summer and eventually landed his parents in jail.

Jerold Morgan, 27, and Alexandra Gatlin, 25, were arrested Oct. 12 for injury to a disabled child, a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years in prison.

Tristan is deaf with a tracheotomy tube and a gastric-feeding tube, and police describe him as a developmentally delayed child. Three nurses who cared for Tristan at the suspects’ home in the 200 block of Janzet Drive notified authorities of the alleged abuse.

One of the nurses, Amanda Tolleson, informed police that she saw Tristan with visible injuries on several occasions.

In November 2010, the nurse observed a large bruise, black eye and swollen cheek on the boy’s face. She said that Jerold told her that Tristan was walking with him outside to his car when Tristan threw himself to the ground and scraped some rocks. But the nurse said she didn’t believe the father since the boy could not walk on his own at that time, an affidavit used to secure an arrest warrant says.

The nurse recalled a second episode in March: Jerold said his son had been rocking in a chair and launched himself into a TV, shattering it. She doubted the father’s story again, and called Tristan very timid and cautious without the strength to do that. Instead, she said that Jerold tossed his son into the TV, she said in the affidavit, written by San Marcos Police Detective Kathy Misiaszek.

GATLIN

Tolleson detailed a third injury  which resulted in an emergency room visit for Tristan. His mother, Gatlin, explained to the nurse that she was alone with Tristan when she saw him break his arm while falling.

But police heard a contradictory story when a psychologist said that Jerold revealed to him that he was holding Tristan’s hand when his son pulled away and fell, causing the injury, investigators say.

In addition, Tolleson disclosed several times when Jerold used his foot to push Tristan out of the way or made him stand in a corner for longer than an hour as part of punishment. Both parents also withheld medical treatment for a life-threatening infection that later sent the boy to the hospital, she said.

The nurse also claimed she witnessed Jerold frequently kick the family dogs and one time strangle a cat until it was unconscious.

The other two nurses, Vea Hodo and Amy Redding, who also care for Tristan during 16-hour shifts on weekdays, corroborated much of the stories, saying that Jerold is neglectful and mentally abusive to Tristan and his younger sister.

In one example, Redding said the boy had just received Cochlear implants, similar to hearing aids. The doctor warned her and the parents that Tristan should be in a quiet setting until he got comfortable with the implants. When they got into the car to drive home, she says, Jerold cranked up the radio and laughed before turning it down, the affidavit stated.

As of Tuesday, Jerold remained in custody at Hays County Jail on a $25,000 bond, while Gatlin had been released on a bond for the same amount.

According to Hays County civil records, an emergency protective order was issued for Tristan on June 17.

This is a very disturbing story.   I hope it’s not true.  If it is true these parents are defective and should be returned for working models…

It makes me want to cry to think of them abusing this little boy and his sister. the damage to the children may be unrepairable.  I hope they get what they deserve for their abuse to their children.

i personally know the family and have been by their side 100% through this all and i just want to say that this is all lies. this article has been changed from the afidavit and made to sound worse than it is. much like statements that were made in teh affidavit. you want the real story why dont you ask the people that have been there not the department responding to false accusations and deffermation of character. what makes me want to cry is the fact that an innocent man is sitting in jail for something he didnt do while the county lets it happen. well i think all this story really shows is how unrelaible it is that innocent people are being accused of such horrible acusations while real abused children are left with their family. o and why dont u ask the nurses what really happened or why they are saying the things that they are or check their drug history i have met and know these nurses over the time span they were treating tristen but when we want to speak the department wont let us tell them what we know they only want to hear what the bad stories are. they should be asshamed of what they are doing to these poor people. i for one would never stand beside them if it was true. i dont think they are innocent I KNOW THEY ARE!!!!

Ashley, we got our facts from the court record. We didn’t change anything to make it sound worse. Check out the documents for yourself: http://haysfreepress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/morgan-gatlin-affidavits.pdf

Holy Crap!  a 25, 000 dollar bond isnt enough for this guy.  He needs to be thankful I wasn’t the nurse.  Ashley, if these are your friends, I’d suggest you find new friends.  The court system doesn’t taken children from their homes without a pretty, damn good reason.

Ashley, these people are pieces of shit.  Any parent that will just leave a 9mm handgun, bag of cocain, and a bong  just layin out on their nightstand where the kids could accidently get into it…has NO right to have their children. And trust me…I am speaking from personal expierence. Didnt read or get all that from an article or an affidavit…I was there, I saw it with my own eyes.  After standing by someone for so long…its hard to see the truth….But its time.

The article doesnt mention their new born baby….thankfully the new born was taken from them befor suffering like the older two.

I   try not to make assumptions about this and let the facts be  heard in the trail as they  become known . would nt want anybody to prejudge me if i was accused of  anything like that would you ?
     TXMade.
If you saw the things you state you saw (with your own eyes ) it is my opinion you should have taken some* action* if necesary   informing  authorities of such.  had you done that this situation may have been prevented .
not saying we should be watchdogs over our fellow citizens  on the contary   but in this case drugs and a firearm in full view of young children would take presidence over any libertarian( live and let live ) attitude i may hold. safety and well being  of my fellow citizens will always be my  priority

AJOHN151……Authorties were notified  the next day by several of us that were there. Trust me…CPS was notified PLENTY of times months prior to this incident. Pictures and reports were taken of ciggerette burns on the child…nothing was done. Several reports were given by caretakers…I also lay blame on CPS because they just dragged their feet in this whole situation and didnt take action soon enough.

Sorry you didnt make that clear  had i known that i would have  complimented you  on your concerned citizen action . sometimes unfortunatly CPS  drag their feet  or so it seems . maybe during the course of the investigation we will find out why

Ever heard of the homicidal triad? also called the Macdonald triad. It links cruelty to animals, obsession with fire setting, and bedwetting past the age of 5 to homicidal behavior. I don’t know if the fire setting or bedwetting were an issue for this guy but if he did do these things to his defenseless 3 year old son then chances are he is headed down a dark road

I’ve worked in the child welfare field for many years, and this story makes me sad. It appears there was some very bad parenting here. CPS may have moved slowly to take action, but they are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. People will complain no matter what they do. I am glad the children are safe now. The justice system will take care of the parents.

It is the responsibility of a parent to keep their child safe.  Those are serious injuries and honestly who really believes a three year old can jump into a tv and break it?  I don’t.  And anyone who kicks their dogs and strangles their cats needs to be in jail anyways.  If they aren’t abusing their child they certainly are shitty parents.  I have kids myself and nothing even remotely close to that has ever happened to them.  And if I had a child with a disability I would watch them extra close to make sure things like that didn’t happen to them.  What kind of monster abuses a disabled child?  A pathetic excuse for a human being and if it isn’t true they are still a pathetic example of a parent.  And I don’t need to know them personally to see that!

As a law student, your grammar and spelling sucks ass Ashley. I can’t wait to see the end result of this case so you can look even stupider when all the facts come out in court.
