News release: County Employees Host Food Drive to Celebrate National County Government Month
Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Each year in April, Hays County employees join colleagues throughout the country to recognize achievements in County Government during April’s National County Government Month. In honor of this year’s theme, “Healthy Counties, Healthy Families,” Hays County employees are holding a food drive to help ensure that those less fortunate have enough to eat.
“We look at being healthy as exercising, eating right, being stress-free and taking care of our minds and bodies,” said Modesta Alcorn, Justice Clerk for Constable Ron Hood in Dripping Springs and a member of the employee events committee. “We sometimes overlook that being healthy means having food to eat or toothpaste to brush our teeth. Many people in our community struggle to afford these basic necessities. As part of our celebration to encourage healthy families, we are collecting food and hygiene items to distribute to food banks throughout Hays County.”
Needed are non-perishable foods such as peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, pinto beans and rice in 1- or 2-pound bags, cereal, oatmeal and canned tuna, meats and stews. Shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, diapers, baby wipes, body soap and detergent are also needed.
“Often donation drives occur around the holidays, but hunger is year-round and the need is great in Hays County,” Alcorn said. “As County employees, we interact with the less fortunate in our communities daily, and we are pleased to be able to help.”
Donation boxes are set up at the County Courthouse, 111 San Antonio St. and the new Government Center at 712 South Stagecoach Trail in San Marcos, Precinct 2 (Kyle) at 111 N. Front St., Precinct 3 (Wimberley) at 114036 Ranch Road 12, Precinct 4 (Dripping Springs) at 195 Roger Hanks Parkway and the Recycling/Solid Waste Centers in Driftwood and Wimberley. Items will be collected through April.
