Summer is here and time for vacations and/or picnics. St. John Lutheran Church of Uhland will have a picnic on the church grounds following a special church service and music program on July 1 to honor all service men and women. All are invited to attend, those that served or are serving and their families, as well as all who wish to be part of the worship and picnic. Hot dogs, chips, dips and watermelon are on the menu. There will be games to play and rumor has it there will be a “hula hoop” contest. Join us at 10:30 a.m. for worship services and enjoy an old-fashioned picnic and games.

There has been a change in the Uhland City Council. Russell Schultz was appointed and accepted to serve as Mayor after Daniel Heideman resigned. Heideman was elected mayor after Dan Sorrells resigned because of ill health and was re-elected and served several years. Prior to that he was Mayor ProTem for 20 years. He will now serve as Alderman and finish the term held by Schultz. We welcome Mayor Schultz and thank him for accepting the position. Thanks also to Daniel Heideman for all the years of serving as mayor and all the volunteer work that went along with the job. The Uhland City Council is as follows: Mayor: Russell Schultz; Alderman: Karri Charlton, Daniel Heideman, Will Jenkins and Glen Smith; City Administrator: Peter McKinny; City Secretary: Karen Gallaher.

The city of Uhland has purchased a Ford F250 pickup and a John Deere tractor with all implements. Now council members do not have to furnish their own equipment to mow, haul trash and patch streets. Thanks to all of the council for a job well done. More needs to be done and all our help is needed by putting trash and recyclables in bins, mowing yards and getting rid of old cars.

Adelene Wisian, Clarence Heideman and Myrtle Heideman enjoyed a visit with a long ago neighbor and long-time friend, Dorothy Harber Henderson, formerly of Wimberley and now a resident of Gruene Senior Living in New Braunfels. Dorothy and family lived on a farm next to the Heideman farm and attended the Uhland School. Lots of good times (including “games of Jacks”) were recalled.
