The Hays High School Lady Rebels basketball camp brought together about 80 girls ages 8-14 for a week in June. Led by Hays High coach Danny Preuss, the girls engaged in skills work, drills, competitions and team play.
For some, it was their first attempt at basketball. For others, it was old hat. But the girls all worked hard during the week to show their skill.
To the Hays High coaching staff, the camp was also a chance to see what kind of talent is on the way. While it may be several years down the road, the camp offered a glimpse of potential future basketball stars.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Kylie Frensley, 8, who had never played basketball before.
Each day, one girl per age group was selected as Camper of the Day; Kylie said she won that award one of the days of the camp.
“I liked all of the competitions,” Kylie said. “We played Hot Shot, Knock Out and Free Throw.”
The chance to win Skittles or other candy probably didn’t hurt.
At the end of the camp, Preuss and his staff handed out awards for Camper of the Week as well as several other awards including All Stars.
Kylie said she also won a Knock Out competition and was selected as an All Star in her age group.
