The Buda City Council held a rare Saturday morning meeting at City Hall to accept the resignation of Place 5 Council Member Dawn Schaeffer.
Schaeffer, who was elected in May 2011, was not present at the meeting.
Shaeffer later told the Free Press that her reason for leaving the council is based on personal financial matters.
“It could be that we could stay in the area, or it could be that we may end up having to move,” Schaeffer said. “I didn’t want the city to incur any additional election expenses so, I thought it was responsible to just go ahead and resign so my seat could be on the November election ballot.”
Schaeffer also served on the council’s IT committee, according to Council Member Bobby Lane.
“She will really be missed,” Lane said.
Council Member Cathy Chilcote said she will also miss Schaeffer’s presence on the council.
“It’s sad to think Dawn will be leaving us,” Chilcote said. “Especially since she’s served the citizens well since she was elected. I respect her decision because family comes first.”
“I know that she’s making the best decision for her household,” Chilcote added. “She’s been a valuable member of this council and she has had a positive impact on the city.”
Council Member Ron Fletcher said Schaeffer has been a consistent voice for the residents on the east side of town.
“I hope the field of candidates includes someone from the same area,” Fletcher said.
The filing period to fill the vacant seat ends Aug. 23. The election is Nov. 6.
