Military veterans who served in all branches of services were honored in various ways this past week.
Southwest Airlines’ “Honor Flight of Austin,” an expenses-paid two-day travel package for 15 area veterans, provided a flight from Austin to Washington, D.C. National Airport. Upon arrival in D.C., travelers boarded a bus to the Hilton Hotel, where a banquet was held in the veterans’ honor. On Friday, they toured memorials dedicated to all branches of the military that served in World War II, including Arlington Cemetery, where guests witnessed the Changing of the Guard. Among the veterans on this flight/tour was Clarence Heideman of San Marcos, a Pearl Harbor survivor who retired from the Marines after 20 years of service. Accompanying him was Daniel Heideman of Uhland.

The Women’s Guild of the St. John Lutheran Church held its monthly meeting on Saturday, Nov. 10. After a carry-in lunch was enjoyed, Gladys Sorrells presented a program on angels, which was very enlightening. A discussion followed by several of the ladies about angels in their life.
Items are still being gathered for the Women’s Shelter of San Marcos. Also items for the food banks are needed.

Birthday parties are so much fun when you are two years old or 102 years. Well, Chloe Schultz was two years old and a large crowd of youngsters and their parents came to have a party at the Kyle City Park on Sunday. A table of refreshments greeted the guests as they arrived. Chloe had a great time opening her gifts and showed them to all, as her dad David took pictures. A birthday cake and ice cream was served. Chloe is the daughter of David and Becca Schultz, granddaughter of Mark and Kathy Schultz and Dennis and Kim Heideman, great-granddaughter of Daniel and Sharon Heideman, great-great granddaughter of the late James and Margaret Holt and Myrtle Heideman and the late Raymond Heideman.

Even though Christmas is still a month away, the Christmas cactus is budding. I also noticed a grasshopper on the porch. Somebody is confused (probably me). Are the white winged doves supposed to be in Uhland? I thought their home is in South Texas. We have four pair (I guess they are pairs) around our front yard.

The Hays Freshmen football team played Alamo Heights last Thursday and won their game. Raney Moore was the quarterback, the position he played for the first time. The young men who are the quarterbacks both could not play because of illness or injuries. Good job, Raney.
