Ralph Pfluger named Texas Hero for Children

Hays CISD icon Ralph Pfluger, namesake of Pfluger Elementary, was honored by the State Board of Education last week as a Hero for Children. Pfluger, a former HCISD board trustee, has been an advocate of education for the past eight decades. He still serves as a volunteer mentor each week.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has selected Hays CISD icon and Pfluger Elementary School namesake Ralph Pfluger as one of this year’s Heroes for Children. Only one person from each of the SBOE districts in Texas is selected for this honor annually.

Pfluger has been an advocate for education nearly his entire life – more than eight decades and counting.

One of Hays CISD’s original school board members, Pfluger continues to be one of the district’s most dedicated volunteers. He is a weekly mentor to students and an advocate for all children, particularly those who face challenges and need extra support.

Of this award, Pfluger said, “I’m not good at talking about myself or bragging on my accomplishments, though in hindsight, I am very proud of all that I have achieved advocating for students at the top level (as a school board member) and working with them individually (as a mentor),” said Pfluger in an essay he was required to write as part of the Heroes for Children nomination process.

“I know I have helped many students through the years and I cherish each and every one of them. More importantly, I would have to say they have helped me too. There’s nothing more important and there’s no greater feeling than knowing you have helped a student see their full potential and achieve more than they thought they could. I think each generation owes it to the next to pass along wisdom and lend a helping hand where possible to those who need it.”

Pfluger was honored at the State Board of Education meeting in Austin on Nov. 16.
