The Lehman Lobos boys basketball team took to the court on Tuesday night still hungry for its first district win against the Lockhart Lions.
The Lobos raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game thanks to some easy transition layups and never looked back. Behind the on-court leadership of senior point guard De’ Andre Carson, who hit a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 16-8, the Lobos continued to use their athleticism to push the score to 24-15 after the first quarter.
The Lobos would see their lead increase in each quarter as they owned a 19-point advantage at half and a 25-point lead after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, the Lobos would continue to attack the basket and even hit some late 3-pointers to prevent a Lions comeback. The outcome was never in question as the Lobos coasted to a 78-38 victory in front of the home crowd.
Leading scorers of the night were senior Carson with 16 points and senior post Diverson Charles also with 16 points. Other key contributors for the Lobos on the night were senior guard Chris Hicks who scored 10 points, while also grabbing four offensive rebounds. Sophomore post Robert Salinas had 11 rebounds of his own.
After the game, Lehman head coach Thomas Acker was pleased with his team’s performance and relieved to get a win before a tough game coming up this Friday night against Clemens.
“Getting that first district win is huge for us because it gives us confidence going into the next few games. After two close losses, this is great for our team and will be a boost as we prepare for Clemens on Friday.”
The Lobos will finish out the first round of district play with games at Clemens, then next week at Hays, and finally a home match with Boerne Champion next Friday night in the Lobo Den.
In the subvarsity games, the Lobos JV squad outpaced the Lions 56-41, as they were in control the entire game thanks to the play of a pair of juniors – Zach Flores and Barry McClintock.
The Freshmen Blue team dropped a close one to the Lions as they attempted to come back from a halftime deficit. But, the Lions squad hit some key shots down the stretch and took away the victory, 42-38.
