Two Austin men are in custody after allegedly shooting at a Buda man who discovered them robbing his home in the Oak Forest Subdivision Thursday morning.

The suspects — Gary Zuniga, 29 and Justin Anthony Hernandez, 24 — have been charged with aggravated robbery, evading arrest and felon in possession of a firearm, after leading police in a “manhunt.”

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office said the suspects fled in a silver Dodge pickup truck before abandoning their vehicle on FM 150 at Springwood, in Dripping Springs. Officers pursued the suspects on foot into a heavily wooded area where Zuniga was quickly apprehended, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 11 a.m., almost two hours after the alleged aggravated robbery, Hernandez was found hiding near a creek bed by Deputy Troy Mayes and his K-9 partner, Deputy Rocky, who were accompanied by the Hays County SWAT Team, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Police recovered a stolen firearm allegedly used in the robbery that had been stolen during a previously reported home burglary in Hays County, the Sheriff’s Office said.  According to Deputy Jeff Jordan, investigators were still searching for the second weapon.

The young man who chased them is incredibly brave. It was not the safe choice, and for that some will say it was a bad choice. I think it’s important to applaud bravery though and this kid deserves an “attaboy” for helping to catch these idiots.

They should have come over a few blocks to our subdivision and tried to rob my or my neighbors house. Would have been a whole different story. We would have returned fire and two less career criminals would be off the streets for good. Now they will maybe get a short sentence and be back to work in no time.
