The Hays boys soccer team earned sole possession of second place in District 49-4A with a big 3-2 road win in Lockhart Tuesday night.
Lockhart would jump on the scoreboard first, obtaining a goal in the first half with 20 minutes remaining. Six minutes would elapse before Hays’ Xavier Garcia found a deflected loose ball in the penalty box to score the equalizer, sending both teams to halftime tied 1-1.
Late in the second half, sophomore Center-Midfielder John Hinnenkamp would step in for injured Forward Christian Varela, eventually scoring a goal via a Christian Chavez cross to give Hays a 2-1 advantage.
However, with 8 minutes left to play, the Lion offense struck once again, penetrating the Rebel defense and retying the match at 2-2.
It would be Hinnekamp who would step up to the challenge one more time. With under 3 minutes to play in the match, Hays’ sophomore Center-Midfielder found his way onto a through ball that was poorly handled by the Lockhart defense. Only having the goal keeper to beat at that point, Hinnekamp would blast home a shot that would become the eventual game winning goal.
Hays’ victory on Tuesday improves the team’s record to 5-2 in district play, giving the Rebels control of second place.
Upcoming for the Rebels will be the second leg of the Hays/Lehman rivalry series, where Lehman currently is the top team in District 49-4A. Game time is scheduled for 7:45 p.m on Friday night at Lobo Field.
