Lehman and Seguin both were wanting a win after coming off losses, but only Lehman pulled it together to hit in the double digits, with the Lobos’ final score over the Matadors 10-5 Tuesday afternoon.
This was the second district game of the year for each team. Lehman needed this win to get back to .500 in both regular season and district records.
Hunter Lehman took to the bump again and ran into a little trouble early. He was a whisper from giving up a three-run first but the second out of the inning came when the batter failed to touch first. What would have been a two RBI double resulted in the runs not counting due to the force out on first.
Lehman answered back in the bottom of the first and jumped to a 5-1 lead. The fundamentals of hitting the ball where it’s pitched was working for the Lobos as they tacked on two more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 7-2.
It stayed that way until the fifth inning when Lobo Aaron Scheckler blasted a three-run home run to centerfield. On his way back to the dugout after his trot around the bags, his teammates gave him the business about the wind helping that one out.
“Yeah the wind was blowing,” Scheckler said after the game. The wind was blowing to center at a good clip for most of the game, but wouldn’t have made a difference on that hit if there had been no wind at all.
“We have to work on making plays behind out pitcher,” Lehman head coach Toby Robinson said.
Making plays defined the sixth and seventh innings for the Lobos defense. Seguin was able to make three runs because of mental mistakes made by the Lobos. A throw to second from left field by Jacob Urea was ruled as interference, resulting in two of the three runs Seguin scored at the end of the game.
Lobo Mark Garcia came in at the top of the seventh to finish out the game as Lehman defeated Seguin 10-5. The Lobos are 9-7 for the season and 1-1 in district play while Seguin falls to 8-7 and 1-1 in the district. The next game for the Lobos is against Kerrville Tivy (9-2-1, 1-0) on Thursday in Kerrville.
