On Center Street
by BRENDA STEWART

After the election campaign frenzy of the past couple of weeks, it looks like things are going to be kind of quiet downtown. Congratulations to our new mayor, Lucy Johnson, and to councilmen-elect Jaime Sanchez and Russ Huebner. I look forward to seeing your plans and ideas put into action as you begin to lead our city.

And, word on the street is that long-time Kyle resident Georgia Vivian graced our town this past weekend. Ms. Vivian, a fixture at the Central Appraisal District for years and years, was paying a visit to ailing friend Blanche Richmond who is recovering nicely, Ms. Vivian reported. Welcome back.

On a cerebral note, the Katherine Anne Porter House on Center Street will be hosting Francine Prose, a New York-born writer and National Book Award finalist, whose work has been adapted to the theatre and motion pictures. Writer-in-residence Michael Noll says, “readings at the Porter House are relaxed, comfortable affairs” attended by a cross-section of university students and local literary supporters. The intimate setting allows direct interaction with the author as well as an opportunity for book signing. The free event is Friday night, at 7:30 p.m. and Noll recommends that you arrive early to assure a good seat.
