On Center Street
by BRENDA STEWART

Boy, those Union Pacific guys are unrelenting. It’s like watching an ant hill. I’ve been whistling “I’ve been workin’ on the railroad…” since last week, so I finally pinned one down on Monday to ask for some minor details like “What on earth are you guys doing?” “What is that nostril-singeing stench pervading my house?” and “When can we expect the honking and banging and traffic snarling to end downtown?”   Good-naturedly, the mechanic I encountered explained that UP was replacing our aging railroad cross ties with new ties soaked in creosote, a highly-toxic wood preservative and fire retardant, hence the aroma. Evidently, they started this project in San Marcos and are working their way down the line to Taylor and they would only be straddling Center Street and then Burleson until they were finished (well, that cleared that up…).

This Saturday, we will finally get a peek into one of downtown’s newest and arguably largest buildings when the Kyle Volunteer Fire Department throws open the doors to the brand spanking new Miller-Whitaker Fire Station. The open house is slated to begin at 2 p.m. with ceremonies, blessings and guest speakers. Tours of the building will be conducted until 5 p.m. and the department will be hosting a community blood drive on-site beginning at 1 p.m. As space is limited, they are advising that you park on the square and stroll a block over and join in the festivities.

And now it’s official. Lucy Johnson is the mayor of Kyle. She was sworn in last night alongside council members Russ Huebner and Jaime Sanchez. It’s a new day on the dais but we’re not done yet.  In May, we’ll be electing two more members to the council when Michelle Lopez and David Salazar complete their terms. I am actually excited about watching this new group of leaders as they shepherd us through these uncertain economic times.

And lastly, don’t forget to vote in the primary election this Tuesday, March 2. As always, it’s important.
