Buda Parks & Recreation
by JAKE EASON

In 1998 the Buda City Council invested in the preservation of Buda’s history and the citizens’ quality of life with the purchase of the Historic Stagecoach Property. After the acquisition of the land, a plan of restoration and land preservation was established to create a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that would fulfill the recreational opportunities and needs of Buda citizens and visitors for generations to come. Today that plan has come to life!

As visitors enter the park they pass by the original Onion Creek Post Office which served most of northern Hays County from 1876 until Buda was founded in 1881. Behind the historical post office lies a 52 acre nature park that includes an array of amenities such as a hike and bike trail system, stocked fishing pond, amphitheater for educational programming, council ring, windmill, pavilion, wildflower meadow, playground and informational kiosks.

The fantastic amenities will serve a variety of recreational needs of park patrons, but the greatest assets of the park are provided by nature. The park is a gold mine of inspiration to photographers and artists through the observance of the natural state of the park. The lengthy trail system provides a gateway to the sounds of Onion Creek, a glimpse of history as you pass through portions of the trail canopied with century old oak trees, and the opportunity to observe native wildlife such as white tail deer, armadillos, and a variety of bird species (owls, cranes, hawks).

If you would like more information on the park please feel free to visit our city website http://ci.buda.tx.us/ or give us a call at 512-312-0084. If you need help locating the park the address is 880 Main St. Buda, Tx 78610.
