Kyle’s newly elected mayor and two new councilmembers flexed their political muscle in their first meeting since taking their oaths of office, voting to push City Manager Tom Mattis off the dais and onto a side table with the rest of the administrative staff.
On the heels of fiercely fought primary battles for county and statewide races last month, five unopposed candidates will cruise into office in the May 8 municipal and school races, which will feature just one contested election in Kyle and one for the Hays school board.

Hays County Democrats took the rare step of deposing a countywide incumbent officeholder, replacing County Judge Elizabeth Sumter on the ticket with Pct. 2 Commissioner Jeff Barton in Tuesday’s primary election.
It was only half an hour after the polls closed on election night, a time when most candidates were anxiously tallying ballot boxes, but Mark Jones was already riding high on a resounding political victory.
Sheriff Tommy Ratliff and County Court at Law Judge No. 1 Anna Martinez Boling, both appointed to their positions after their predecessors’ deaths in office, held up well against challengers in Tuesday’s Democratic Party primary.
Rose took just shy of 80 percent of the vote in the Democratic primaries against Driftwood resident Andrew Backus, the former chair of the Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District.
Polls close at 7 p.m. for both the Republican and Democratic Party primaries. In most precincts, both parties hold their elections at the same location, but not all of them.
With no shortage of marquee matchups on both parties’ primary ballots Tuesdays, the campaign for internal control of the Hays County Republican Party has drawn little notice.
