As a librarian for many years, I have heard varied reasons why people should or should not pay a fine that has been assessed to their account. While we don’t particularly like fines, they are necessary reminders to return library materials on time and to help recoup losses incurred from lost materials and lost circulation.

The Friends of the Buda Public Library held their annual meeting on Sunday, bringing to a close a very productive year for the group. Kathy Luckett, president of the organization throughout 2012, presided over the two-hour meeting of Friends members and the public. Notable among the attendees was Buda Mayor Todd Ruge and City Council Member Eileen Altmiller, both former officers of the non-profit organization in previous years.

The Kyle Public Library has added a large selection of Spanish and bilingual (Spanish-English) books. The books were purchased through grants provided by Target, and the Burdine Johnson Foundation. The collection includes beginning readers, juvenile fiction and nonfiction books. The community is invited to come by the library and check-out the Spanish and bilingual books.

Memoirs are a fascinating genre. Wouldn’t we all love the opportunity to write the story of our lives, leaving out the times when we were petty and selfish and impossible to be around? It seems preferable to write one’s life story with oneself as the hero, the shining example of courage and kindness, admired by others but envied and misunderstood by our older, less attractive siblings.

Kyle Public Library is changing! Patrons will now have the opportunity to choose from a variety of computer classes offered at various times throughout the month. These classes will vary in length from an hour to an hour-and-a-half, depending on the particular topic. Classes offered range from the computer basics to introductions of the various office software – Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

nother great mystery at the Kyle Public Library! “A Sunless Sea” by Anne Perry is a suspenseful Victorian mystery that will leave you sitting on the edge of your chair. Detective William Monk, commander of the River Police in 1864 London, and his partner, Orme, discover the mutilated body of a woman on the Limehouse Pier while cruising the river on a cold and foggy morning.
The Buda Library’s summer programs for children and youth came to a close with awards ceremonies earlier in August, but with kids back in school there’s still a lot happening
