Lessons from history surround us

Lessons from history surround us

Americans tend to react to sound bites and the latest blog when it comes to news. But Americans need to look at the true American history to truly understand what is going on. We can’t jump on the bandwagon every time an event happens. It doesn’t take long to realize that we let the government [...]

Congress needs a dictionary

Congress needs a dictionary

I am becoming totally dissatisfied with the goings on in Washington D.C. – on both sides of the aisle, in both houses. Both the House and the Senate need a lesson in the constitutio

Armed people in schools? Not really

Armed people in schools? Not really

I wonder if Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association ever reads the newspapers, watches any television, or listens to the radio. I guess he must not listen closely, or else he is so blinded by weapons manufacturers that he cannot understand that guns don’t always stop bad guys.

Losing the true meaning behind education?

Losing the true meaning behind education?

Have Americans made education the scapegoat for all of our ills? Why are Americans so willing to accept dictates about education to be passed along without questions?

Republicans are withdrawing

Republicans are withdrawing

There is more than one way to withdraw from something and the Republican Party seems to be rapidly doing just that intellectually – from the rest of the United States. They still want the economic help of the all of the people, but do not want to be a part of a changing America.

Why do we need unions?

Why do we need unions?

“I see no reason why an employer should not be able to tell you to work from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. and then have you come back and work from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. After all, isn’t that an eight-hour day? It is the employer’s right to work you 10 hours a day with no additional pay. It is a job isn’t it?”

Two party system needs strengthening

Two party system needs strengthening

I believe in the two-party system of government in this country and have lived in enough places that I am convinced of the need for it. Growing up in Kansas, I was a junior in high school before I became convinced that FDR’s first name was not an expletive. Then, while living in Colorado, I lived in a county that was in dire need of a Democratic Party, while the county to the north was in dire need of a Republican Party. I now live in a state that is in need of the new Democratic Party and in a county that is even more so.

‘Tis the season to shop local

‘Tis the season to shop local

The day after Thanksgiving has come to be known as “Black Friday.” That is the day that many merchants maintain that they are in the “black” on their profit-and-loss statement for the year. The stores run ads that cause folks to line up at all hours of the morning to be first into the store. People have been known to have been trampled to death by those so eager to enter.

Don’t fence in this Texan from Kansas

Don’t fence in this Texan from Kansas

Growing up in Kansas, I believed that all the cowboys in the world were in Texas. I associated ten-gallon hats on Roy Rogers and Gene Autry with cowboys and Texas. As I remember, some of those “oaters” I couldn’t wait to see on Saturday afternoons, I never never saw Roy or Gene ever deal with any cattle in any movie.

Vote for the person, not the party

Vote for the person, not the party

It’s that time again – the most important day of decision in the governance of our country, our state and our local governments. But there are too many people who do not take voting as seriously as they should.
