Chapa Middle School students, their families and friends, all runners, walkers, athletes, community members and people who just love to spend time outside are invited to run/walk in the Chapa 5K Challenge. This is a school fundraiser. Awards will be given for the fastest times. Event also includes a Zumba challenge and Health Fair. The Chapa 5K takes place at 9 a.m. April 6. San Marcos CISD has earned the 2013 Leadership Circle Gold Award from the Comptroller of Public Accounts. Launched in December 2009, the Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle recognizes local governments across Texas who met high standards for financial transparency online. “Gold” recipients have set the bar with their transparency efforts; “Silver” encourages those who are making progress, and “Bronze” is for those who are in the beginning stages in their efforts.

The Board of Trustees of Hays CISD will hold a budget workshop on March 7 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the administration offices located at 21003 Interstate 35 in Kyle. The meeting is expected to last for two hours. It is not anticipated the Board will adjourn to closed session for this meeting.

The Special Programs (Life Skills & Autism classes) at Hays High School are holding a fundraiser from 5-9 p.m. Feb. 28 at the IHOP in Kyle. Diners must present the flyer to their server and purchase a drink with each meal for classes to receive 20 percent of the pre-tax profits. The money will be used for community trips and to buy supplies for daily living activities, such as cooking, cleaning and celebrating. Visit the Hays CISD website to download the flyer.

Come out and watch senior guys strut their stuff at the 2013 Mr. Rebel Contest. Tickets are being sold on campus for $4. Tickets will be $5 at the door. All the proceeds will go toward the Hays High Project Graduation – an all night lock in event to help reduce the chance of students drinking and driving while celebrating graduation. The pageants takes place at 7 p.m.this Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Hays High School theater.

Parents of students at Hays CISD third and fourth-grade students who are interested in learning more about the Venus 5 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program can attend an information meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Performing Arts Center. For anyone thinking of returning to college or finishing a GED, Texas State AmeriCorps G-Force members will offer free help and answers to questions. The program is open from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to noon and again from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the San Marcos Public Library. Times by appointment are also available. G-Force members will help with searching for colleges, filling out applications, and looking for scholarships and financial aid, including the FAFSA
