Hays Judge Liz Sumter and the Hays Commissioners should be praised for their strong stand against the precedent-setting discharge of treated sewage into Bear Creek and into the Edwards Aquifer.
We should also be proud of the downstream landowners that are also fighting this ill-conceived, profit-motivated scheme by California developers.
This discharge effort by out-of-state, moneyed interests could be a nightmare for over 50,000 Central Texans that rely on the Edwards Aquifer as their sole drinking water source and for the hundreds of thousands of Barton Springs swimmers.
If only the LCRA and the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District would reconsider their support of the sewage discharge.
Hopefully, other local, state, and federal officials will also stand strong along with Hays County and the City of Austin and say no to discharge in the recharge zone and yes to a clean drinking water supply and a clean Barton Springs.
