A San Marcos man driving the wrong way down the interstate died early Monday morning in Buda, and injured three others in the collision.
According to investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Jose Alfredo Hernandez, 31, was driving his 1996 Oldsmobile down the southbound lanes of IH-35 near the 220 mile marker at 12:21 a.m.
He then appeared to make a u-turn, investigators say, and was heading north on the southbound lane when he collided head-on with a 2007 Jeep Compass.
Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep, Jeffrey Hill, 25, and his two passengers, Amy Mullin, 25, and Alicia Vela, 23, were transported to Brackenridge Hospital, where they were listed as being in stable condition.
Hill and Mullin had addresses in Overland Park, Kansas, while Vela has an address in Westminster, Colorado.
DPS officials are awaiting toxicology reports and could not immediately confirm if Hernandez was intoxicated. DPS officials did not know if Hernandez and the other accident victims were wearing seat belts. The accident is under investigation.
