A 30-year-old man was arrested Thursday in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a construction worker along IH-35 southbound, just north of Buda, officers say.
David Delacerda was charged with failure to render aid, a 3rd degree felony, after he struck and killed Fontino Cortes-Cruz, 35, when he drove through a construction site early Wednesday morning in his dark-colored SUV, said Sgt. Richard Stresing, Austin Police Department spokesperson.
The SUV was later found outside of Kyle abandoned and scorched, leaving Delacerda with non-life threatening burns, Stresing said.
“He fled into Hays County and burned his vehicle to rid the evidence and in the process burned himself,” he said. “His girlfriend then took him to South Austin Hospital because of his burns.”
Hospital officials notified police of Delacerda, who was then transferred for treatment to Brooke Army Medical Center, where San Antonio police arrested him.
Delacerda will eventually be moved to Travis County to possibly face more charges, Stresing said.
