The Texas Department of Transportation will shut down the intersection of Main Street and IH-35 in Buda overnight next week in the first phase of work replacing the interstate overpass.
Main Street will be closed at the access road from Monday, Feb. 15 – Friday, Feb. 19 between 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. as a portion of the bridge is demolished.
Interstate main lanes will be narrowed, but there will not be any lane closures in this phase of work, said TxDOT spokesperson John Hurt.
Motorists trying to access northbound IH-35 from downtown Buda will detour south to the u-turn at FM 2001. They can also avoid the construction zone altogether by taking Cabela’s Drive to FM 2001. Drivers traveling south from Buda’s east side will head north and loop around at FM 1327.
The $9 million road project is being funded primarily through federal stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and will address drainage and flooding issues at that intersection. TxDOT will demolish and reconstruct the existing bridge in order to correct a six-foot dip at the Main Street underpass, Hurt said. The bridge will also be widened. The project is slated to take 18 months.
