Dahlstrom Middle School’s 7th and 8th-grade academic UIL teams each rolled to their respective UIL academic titles and their 6th grade counterparts took 2nd, by virtue of strong across-the-board performances at the district meet at Lockhart Junior High recently. The Mustangs’ showing was impressive, with many highlights, but each Hays CISD middle school came home with something to brag about.
Campus-by-campus highlights:
Dahlstrom Middle School: The Mustangs grabbed 15 event firsts including a trio of 1-2-3 sweeps, two of those from the championship-winning 8th grade. Dahlstrom’s Laura Albarado, Trey Solis and Deanna Starlin were 1-2-3, respectively, in 8th grade Dictionary Skills, and 8th graders Alyssa Wagner, Adelae Vayas and Banner Steel were 1-2-3, respectively in Spelling. Dahlstrom 7th-graders Emily Yager, Katie Wenzel and Thea Robinson were 1-2-3, respectively, in 3-D/Miscellaneous Art.
The title-bound Mustang 8th grade also had a 1-2 showing in Painting Art from Deven Fuentes and Lauren Trobley, respectively, and added firsts from Ty Goebler in Science, Wyatt Madden in Number Sense, Megan Banks in Maps, Charts and Graphs, and Kathleen Shoemaker in 3-D/Miscelleneous Art.
Dahlstrom’s 7th grade highlights also included a 1-2 to Reid Johnson and Emory Cuzze in Math, as well as firsts to Rachel Tenney in Editorial Writing and Kailani Pinon in Drawing Art.
In 6th grade competition, the Mustangs’ Noah Benedict and Gracie Hough were 1-2 in Math and Madelyn Gladek and Hannah Penry were 1-2 in Music Memory. Claudia Norman added a first in Oral Reading, as did Heidy Mendoza in Spanish Oral Reading.
Additional 8th grade places went to Alyssa Wagner, Eric Villareal, Jessica Cruz, Aubrey Tate, Austin Tate, Walker Stone, Logan Lindsey, Devin Palm, Zakk Plummer, Kimberly Gonzalez, Dylan Fall, Alex Key and Austin Carroll. Mustang 7th grade placers included Rebekah Pogue, Taylor Morey, Thomas Stevens, Mary Fowler, Angela Tenney, Ashley Scholl, Joseph Rubio, Chris Gonzales, Nataly Castro, Emily Yager, Katie Wenzel, Heath Agnew, Mara Romero, Dustin Zimmerman, Holly Hogsett, Brett Williams and Nick Harrelson.
Completing the Mustang showing were 6th grade placers Lorelie Pierce, Austin Uresti, Kathryn Peterman, John Mendoza, Thomas Hunter, Kaycee Armstrong, Crispin Lyman, Ryan Clark, Anthony Uresti, Chase Salazar, Claudia Norman, Gabriel Perez, Raquel Penalver, Allison Scott, Kianna Ramos, Pat Chida and Kristiena Loza-Garcia.
Barton Middle School: Barton’s Bobcats had an outstanding UIL showing at Lockhart, pulling seven firsts, four of them from the 8th grade, including a 1-2 in Listening Skills (Tyler Gray and Sarah Serrano, respectively) and a 1-3-4 in Oral Reading (Antonio Sanchez, Monica Aguilar and Julia Widmer, respectively). Barton’s 7th grade Impromptu Speaking was 1-3-4 (Mackenzie Landeros, Tori Barnes and Brittany Squires, respectively).
Additional Bobcat firsts went to Harrison Scott-Maldonado in 8th grade Modern Oratory, Austin Dennis in 8th grade Drawing Art, Nick Gonzales in 7th grade Ready Writing and Isaiah Knox, Trevor McCulley and Jonathan Pflaum in 7th grade Team Math.
The Barton 6th grade highlight was Melissa Cardona’s second place in Painting Art.
Additional places went to 8th-graders Riley Dougay, Aldo Hernandez, Rebekah Vashus, Leah Hixon, Reese Martin, Christian Rodriguez and Marisa Bosma. The Bobcats also placed 7th graders Grace Peterson, Brittany Squires, Isaiah Knox, Alyssa Kadjar, Kenny Lopez, Patrick O’Neil, Jesse Armstrong, Zachary Zuniga, Nate Jackson, Nathan West, Sabrina Smith, J.T. Warren, Mary Shoemake, Caleb North, Grace Peterson and McKenzie Brown.
Additional placing Bobcat 6th graders were Christine Brown, Ashlee Claggett, Lois Bronaugh, Kailey Bozarth, Drake Foley, Marshall Marberger, Mark Ramirez, Darlene Valadez, Victoria Ortega, Ashley Thornton, Justin Kirby, Jacob Mendiola, Lilian Bonnin and Alex Tehter.
Wallace Middle School: The Rangers 8th grade took home third for their grade level, the effort highlighted by firsts from Zach Amundsen in Impromptu Speaking and Nick Petta in Science. Brenda Reyes and Alexis Soto were 1-2, respectively, in 8th grade Editorial Writing. Seventh grade firsts went to Alicia Valdez in Spanish Oral Reading and Adrian Castro in Spelling. Sixth grader Kali Palomarez took a first in Number Sense.
Other Ranger points came from 8th graders Alexis Soto, Albert Percastegui, Jennifer Teel, Angelica Aguirre, Lex Ortiz, Payton Garza, Alexandria Fajardo, Taryn Bailey, Rachel Peace, Zach Rowley and Ashley Osorio. Additional 7th grade points were provided by Samantha Soto, Antonio Portillo, Dylan Garrett and Vivian Galvinanes. Other scoring 6th graders included Marcus Rivera, Brandon Beaman, Brooke Longoria, Elexa Chism, Arianna Pickett, Jada Cherry and Kali Palomarez.
Simon Middle School: With students and sponsors just getting their feet wet with UIL competition at the district’s newest campus, the competition from established UIL powers was tough. But Simon’s Wolverines, who will host the contest in 2011, got on the scoreboard with three 6th graders. Adam Morales took a third in Calculator and Alexis Gossett and Miranda Garcia were 4-5, respectively, in Oral Reading.
Chapa Middle School: Chapa’s 7th graders highlighted the Cougar effort with three firsts, among them Jacob Greer in Modern Oratory, Ian McGrath in Number Sense and Alexandria Williams in Social Studies. Cougar 6th grader Kyler McGehee also scored a first in Listening Skills.
Additional Chapa point scoring came from 8th graders Christina Cruz, Elyssa Perales, Gabriel Doria, Abigail Quintanilla, Selina Calderon, Angel Tompkins,Wesley Sutton, Christopher Salas, Kevin Meckel, Derrik Robinson, Brody Cox, Sara Davis, Karina Haro, Mariah Tamayo and Oscar Ortiz.
Cougar 7th graders adding more points included Anissa Samaniego, Judith Lima, Selina Calderon, Eric Espinoza, Joshua Bee, Guillermo “Will” Tenorio, Star Rivers, Elizabeth Walters, Jacob Greer, Conrad Russell, Ashley King, Ana Tovar, Noemi Rocha, Rainey Ramirez and Ofelia Negrete. Chapa 6th graders bringing in additional points included Kayley Green-Tooney, John Kelsey, Cassie McCool, Christian Rodriguez and Harley Williamson.
