Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the annual meeting for the Friends of the Library. The information and speakers were exceptional. However, one presentation made by Martha Sanders, the library’s youth programs coordinator, truly opened my eyes about their literacy services program.
Martha began with the library’s mission statement: “To maintain and improve the quality of life for all residents of the community by providing resources and services that contribute to knowledge, education, enjoyment and lifelong learning.”
Expanding on this mission is not easy, we know that literacy development begins early in life and is correlated to school achievement, which contributes to a more successful workforce. The ongoing formula here is early literary services equals economic success.
Our library accomplishes this through very dedicated staff support for our students through suggested book topics, homework assistance, 24/7 access to research databases and test proctoring assistance.
The summer literacy programs are the most proficient throughout central Texas, enabling students of all grades to maintain the education process during their summer break.
These wonderful programs include the Summer Science Club, Central Texas Library Services, Ready to Read program, and the Buda Public Library’s story time, which provides local writers, Buda firefighters, and other people with interesting jobs and backgrounds to read story books to wide-eyed youngsters.
If your children haven’t experienced the literacy services at Buda’s public library, it’s time you brought them in and opened their window to our world.
