Kyle Parks & Recreation
by KERRY URBANOWICZ
Spring has sprung, the grass is green and the sun is shining. Must be that time of year when we head to City Square Park on the first Saturday of the month for Kyle Market Days. Located in the heart of downtown Kyle, Market Days’ vendors will be ready for shoppers at 9 a.m. Farm-fresh produce, hand-crafted items, food, drink and live music will be available until 2 p.m.
Each month from April thru November the Kyle Market Days will have a theme or special event to add to the experience. This year’s themes and events include blood drives, back-to-school supply drives, homecoming, Lehman band, hot rods and classic cars. April will start things off with a barbeque cook-off as we celebrate the fajita taco.
The Kyle Lions Club is hosting the first ever Fajita Fiesta and BBQ Cook-off this weekend. Legend has it that the first fajita taco sold commercially was right here in Kyle in 1969. The barbeque cook-off will include fajitas along with IBCA sanctioned categories in brisket, chicken and ribs. Anyone can enter the “open categories” of salsa and guacamole. Along with cash prizes and trophies, bragging rights are up for grabs! Registration and check-in begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and cook’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. Cook-off teams or individuals can get registration information by visiting the Fajita Fiesta website link at www.kylepard.com or contacting a Kyle Lions Club member. All proceeds from the Fajita Fiesta will support the wonderful community service programs sponsored by the Lions Club right here in the Kyle area.
Music will be filling the City Square this weekend as bands will be playing Friday night from 5:30-10 p.m. Come out to listen to Conjunto Romo and The Ben Tylor Johnson Band. Scheduled to appear on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. is Kyle’s own Redd Volkaert and his band along with The Gulf Coast Playboys and Come Drum for Fun. There is no charge to park or listen to the music.
Let’s all kick off April this Saturday and attend the Fiesta and Market Days at City Square Park in historic downtown Kyle, under the shade of the oak trees.
