Odds & Ends

It’s almost that time again, the end of school. Time to graduate from high school, college, etc., time for fun, prepare for more school or look for a job.
Back when, not many had the opportunity to go to college. If you lived in town, you might get a job sacking groceries, delivering newspapers, washing windshields, and airing up tires at the service station. On the farm it was chop weeds, tend to the garden, hunt eggs, shuck corn, mow lawns with a push mower. Yes, times have changed and now it’s hard to find someone to mow the lawn.

Before I forget, I want to wish all mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and even great-great grandmothers, a “Happy Mother’s Day.”

Not much time left, so the members of the Men’s Fellowship of St. John Lutheran Church are busy planning and preparing for the annual barbeque meal, open antique and classic car show, raffle and silent auction on the church grounds in Uhland on Highway 21. The car show starts at 10:30 a.m., door prizes for all registered cars will be given every 30 minutes until 2 p.m. Serving of the meal will begin at 11 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. Raffle drawing for the barbeque pit will be at 2:00 p.m. That’s on Saturday, May 15.
Notice to all members of St. John who wish to donate items for these events, a sign-up sheet is in back of the church sanctuary. Thanks to all.

Have you noticed the “big” building next to 5 Star Cement on Old Spanish Trail? That is the K&J Woodworks who are moving here from Kyle. Yes, Uhland is growing.
Those of you who have business with or have attended the Uhland City Council meetings have noticed and used the covered wooden walkway now. There will be no more muddy shoes or wet heads. It is also wheel chair accessible. Good job!

It may be a good idea, if you have any, to clean the trash piles in your yard, barnyard, etc. to prevent rattle snakes harboring near your residence. Several people in the Uhland community have come close to one; one citizen touched one as she was going to feed her pet rabbits. So beware.
