Kyle resident loses almost $2,300 in internet scam
A Kyle resident who believed that he had won a lottery worth $800,000, swallowed an internet scam hook, line and sinker, police say.
On May 10, the Kyle Police Department responded to a deceptive business practice call at a Kyle residence. Apparently, the resident had sent Western Union money transfers adding up to almost $2,300 on false hopes of receiving lottery earnings promised in a string of e-mails, a police report said.
The case is under investigation; however, it is unlikely to be solved as the source of the e-mails cannot be found, police say.
Internet scams are common and scammers are rarely caught since they often conduct their crimes from overseas.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warns internet users not to fall for these illegal practices.
According to its Web site, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Also, do not believe the promise of large sums of money, do not invest in anything you are not absolutely sure about, and do your homework to ensure that the individual or company is legitimate. Plus, be sure to protect your bank account information.

The money from the robbery was large since the clerk was in the process of making a cash drop deposit, police say.
