Local Memorial Days events will kick off Saturday with a walk to honor fallen troops, followed by ceremonies on Monday.
In Austin, the 4th Annual March for Fallen Heroes is slated for this Saturday at noon. The seven-mile walk will start and end along the Lady Bird Lake running trail, looping around the state capitol.
The walk will honor service members, first responders and civilians who have lost their lives during military conflicts or terrorism events. Veterans are encouraged to don their old uniforms. Everyone will meet at a rally point adjacent to Austin High School, located at 1715 West Cesar Chavez St.
On Monday, the Kyle/Buda Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12058 will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. in front of the VFW building at the corner of Main and Center streets. The tribute will include a rifle salute by VFW members.
The Manchaca VFW Post 3377 also plans to conduct its ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Live Oak Cemetery. Cadets from Hays High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will perform the rifle salute.
