On Sunday May 30, 2010 Big Mac went to a joyous heavenly reunion with Marie, his wife of 60 years, his parents John Daniel and Elizabeth McCann and his granddaughter Katie. Big Mac’s zest for life, booming laugh and bear hugs will be missed by all who experienced them. He was born and raised in Butte, Montana, served in the Army during World War II, graduated from Montana State University where his football playing ability earned him a stint in pro football. He married his true love Marie in 1950, obtained a Masters degree from the University of Texas in Austin and moved his family to New Braunfels, Texas in 1965 where he lived in the same home until his death. Big Mac spent a lifetime as a coach, educator and mentor and many of his former students continued to seek his advice and counsel throughout his life. He is survived by his sons Mike (Donna), Pat (Anne), Dan (Noma), Neil (Ruby), extended son Bob (Karen) Williams, sister Betty McLellan SNJN, and grandchildren Keith, Sean, Kelsey and Aili who will all miss their Dad, Brother and Papa. A celebration of Mac’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday June 5 at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels with a reception following. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the New Braunfels Aquatic Club c/o Mike McLellan, 13710 Cayo Gorda, Corpus Christi, Texas 78418 or a charity of their choice with a request to notify Mike McLellan at the above address.
