STAFF REPORTS
In a world of videos games, iPads, DVRs and the 24 hour news cycle, it’s easy to forget a different kind of world – one that involves family, friends and kin coming together to dance to the sound of old time fiddle music on the banks of a flowing river.
The Dayton Roberts Memorial Old Fiddler’s Contest wrapped up the 113th Camp Ben McCulloch Reunion in Driftwood this Friday. Every June since 1896, campers have gathered for a week under the full moon to relax in the cool creek.
Since 1946, the fiddle contest has been one of the highlights of the reunion. Originally organized by violin-maker Dayton Roberts, Maggie Shelton took over the events following his death in 1990.
