Lehman High School’s cheerleaders are just back from summer camp at the University of Texas and coach Stacy Delgado’s contingent couldn’t be happier. The groups’ overall results, as well as individual showings, were both record-setters for the high-flying Lobos.
“Very proud mama!” is how Delgado said she feels coming home after her varsity took second place as Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp Champs All-American Cheer. The Lobos’ junior varsity swept to first place Camp Champs in X-treme Routine and the Lehman freshman squad took first place as Camp Champs in All-American Cheer.
“This is the first year that Lehman has ever won any Camp Champs,” Delgado reports. Her program continues to show vitality, with the varsity taking seventeen members to camp, nineteen representing the junior varsity and thirteen more doing freshman duty this year. Joseph Martinez handles junior varsity coaching responsibility and Donye Curry is freshman coach.
While much of the competition’s focus is on teamwork, individual competition is another highlight and Delgado and her staff couldn’t be prouder, as eight of their cheerleaders came home with “All-American Cheerleader” honors this year.
Varsity captain Jason Workman and co-captain Alyssa Lucio were among those so-honored and they were joined by varsity cheerleader Bryan Cox. Personality-plus Alicia Naspretto (as Louie the Lobo) racked up her third straight All-American honor and JV co-captains Brandi Fuller and Breanna Alonzo rounded out the sophomore and up division. Joshua Peterson and Wesley Sutton took the honors in the freshmen and below division.
The sophomore and up division cheerleader honorees get the opportunity to march in the New Year’s Day parade in London, mascots perform at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando and freshman division winners are invited to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in Houston.
Delgado reports that all of the Lobo squads received overall “Superior” ratings and that her Lehman program received the “Traditions Award” for the chants and cheers they use throughout the year and for the time they’re in camp.
A total of more than 800 participants took part in the UCA “Texas IV” meet, representing almost two dozen programs from across the state.
