Bruce Wayne Sanders, 68, of Onion Creek, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Lee Sanders and Jewel Harbin Sanders and brothers Russell Sanders and Doug Sanders. Wayne is survived by his beloved wife Cathy; children, Michael Sanders, Madelyn Uresti, Melanie Sanders and Holy May. He also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren, four nieces, two nephews and the mother of his children and her husband, Nora and Nelson Roberts.
Wayne grew up in Corpus Christi and was a “boy of the sea.” He graduated from Ray High School where he was a star athlete, excelling in football, basketball and his great love, baseball. Wayne went on to Texas A&M on a baseball scholarship, but suffered a career-ending injury. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in accounting. He went on to become Supervisor of the Accounting Department at UT. Wayne continued his baseball career by coaching Oak Hill Pony League and the Woodlawn Baptist Church softball team.
He was always happy to “rise to the occasion” of leadership. He served as president of the Oak Park Neighborhood Association and Oak Hill Neighborhood Association. He served as treasurer and president of the Onion Creek Homeowners Association and was active in Woodlawn Baptist Church.
A celebration of Wayne’s life was held July 31 at Woodlawn Baptist Church with interment following at Forest Oaks Memorial Park. The family has requested donations be made to the American Kidney Association.
