Of Cabbages and Kings
by BOB BARTON
Some old fellow, who claims to have been a livewire country newspaper editor back in the “Gunsmoke” era, volunteered to write an update on area campaign finances and he did so a couple of weeks ago. He reluctantly admits to a small goof. In the story on the campaign contributions to State Representative Patrick Rose and his challenger, Jason Isaac, we listed donations of $100 or more from Hays Countians There were quite a few, but there was one glaring error.
Melissa and Matt Young of Wimberley did donate $550 to Republican Isaac as was reported. (Matt is a former Republican challenger against Rose. He and his wife DID NOT give a donation to Rose. That’s the long and short of it.)
Although the oldtime scribe blamed the goof on “type lice” and a couple of superannuated former printer’s devils who were spotted near our premises, he has been severely chastised.
With great glee, the management ceased their Facebook frenzy long enough to demote the culprit to serve as the obituary editor of our newspaper at Mentone, which boasts a population of about 15, all of whom hold Loving County political office (except for a new born babe who hasn’t learned to crawl yet).
The old geezer is not dismayed by the demotion. In fact it is reported that he plans to move a few miles across the New Mexico state line and run for governor of New Mexico.
Our apologies are proffered to all Republicans and Democrats in the county for the error. As soon as the Tea Party folks conclude their investigation into the “real” reason for the mistake, we’ll say “excusa” to them also.
