Odds & Ends
by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN
As you drive the country roads or even the highways, you will notice that the farmers have harvested most, if not all, of the maize crops and many acres of stalks have been shredded and “plowed under.” Several farmers are busy harvesting the corn. I know you should keep your eye on the road, but have you noticed the cotton rows are showing a lot of white bolls? Won’t be long before the cotton strippers and pickers will be busy, by that I mean machines, not human beings, as it was in the “good ole days?”
Speaking of good old days, summer is almost over and it’s almost time for school to begin. I understand that some will start on Monday, August 23. If you have been shopping lately, you noticed mothers with arms full of new clothes for school, followed by smiling youngsters. I don’t know if the smiles were in anticipation of the start of school or wearing the new clothes, maybe both events.

Business consisted mostly of plans for the Harvest Festival on October 23 (note the date change). There were 10 ladies in attendance.

Coming for a visit and lunch with Raymond and Myrtle Heideman last Thursday were Leonard and Blanche Kramer of New Braunfels and Clarence Heideman and Adelene Wisian of San Marcos. After a chicken fajita lunch, games of “42” and visiting were enjoyed. Daniel Heidman joined them during his lunch break.
