On Center
by BRENDA STEWART
So, what I want to know is who beaned the wooden railroad crossing bar at the tracks on Center Street last weekend? There were no skid marks leading up to it or glass fragments around. Someone heading west whacked it hard enough to crack the end in half, though.
Now if they had been traveling from the opposite direction I would just surmise that they’d had a snoot full of cooling their heels at that infuriatingly ill-timed light at Burleson and then just made a break for it. But coming in from the east? They must have just been hell-bent trying to get back to downtown Kyle. I get it.

We’ve got some really cool things happening in downtown, but it looks like we might have to wait a week (they had to cancel the last Teen Swim Night at the Kyle Pool on Friday so don’t head in that direction). Our final flick in Gregg-Clarke Park will be “Astro Boy” on the 3rd, followed by Market Days on the 4th and Claiborne Kyle Log House tours on the 5th, so just plan on hanging out downtown all weekend long.

One uncool thing happening in downtown, though, is the number of people flying down the road yakking on their cell phones, poking doughnuts into their pie holes, oblivious to crosswalks and school zones every morning. Come on. Wipe the chocolate sprinkles off your face and put the phone in the trunk if you can’t stop yourself from answering it. Not only is it a $100 ticket, it’s up to us to keep these little guys safe. And you can’t do it obliviously multi-tasking as you hurl down the road.

On a happier note, we’ll be wrapping up this last month of summer celebrating what would have been LBJ’s 102 birthday at Texas Old Town on Sunday afternoon from 3-6 p.m. Hosted by the Hays County Democratic Party, the event features barbecue prepared by grill gurus Constable David Peterson and former sheriff Don Montague, birthday cake and a silent auction. So come out and celebrate with us and meet the folks that are hoping to lead us into this next decade.
