Today starts the beginning of my favorite season and it was great to lose the chaos of the August calendar and flip the page to my as-of-yet uncluttered month of September. So far, it looks like our last movie of the 2010 Summer Series will take place this Friday, the 3rd, in Gregg-Clarke Park. The movie “Astro Boy” is an animated adventure about a powerful robot child, created to replace a grieving scientist’s dead son, who becomes a superhero and saves the day when aliens threaten the earth. What caught my eye: voice actors include Nicolas Cage and Donald Sutherland. Show starts at 8:15 p.m.

Then, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. we have our first Market Days of the fall on the square in downtown. This month, the entertainment will feature the Lehman Lobo Band and the booster club will host a bar-b-que and blood drive.
On Sunday, take a short drive out Stagecoach Road and explore the historic Claiborne Log House. The gate will be open from 2-5 p.m. and knowledgeable folks will be on hand to lead tours and answer questions.

The first holiday of the school year is this Monday, September 6, so now that you’ve finally got your kiddos used to getting up before dawn, you can let them sleep in and have a no-labor day.

The Free Press’ monthly magazine, All Around Hays, is hitting the stands today and this issue is one that you won’t want to miss. It seemed to morph into a bit of a conglomeration of lists, opinions and adventures from wildly varying sources and view points. Our new editor, however, wrangled the information and we put together a kind of loosely based survival guide with tales from the edge and even a layout of the Texas State Fair fairgrounds touting this year’s theme “Super Sized Fun” which brings in fried festivities from Sept. 24 through Oct. 17. Copies of All Around Hays are also available at local restaurants and businesses so pick one up and enjoy the fun.
