An incident at Lehman High School Thursday afternoon ended in one student being detained by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and the other heading to a hairdresser to get her singed hair trimmed.
The student who was detained is a male and a minor, according to the sheriff’s office.
The victim’s aunt told the Hays Free Press that a fellow student briefly set her niece’s hair on fire at Lehman High School.
“The school’s video surveillance system caught it on tape,” the victim’s aunt said. “I wonder if the school is going to consider this bullying?”
An incident report sent out Friday morning by the sheriff’s office listed the offense under the assault category. Sgt. Phillip Taylor of the sheriff’s office confirmed that the young man was detained. He was taken to the Hays County juvenile correctional facility.
Hays CISD spokesperson Tim Savoy said the district is cooperating with the investigation. The school would have to turn over any video evidence of the incident if subpoenaed, he added.
The school district has said it will enforce the appropriate disciplinary action on the student based on the outcome of the law enforcement investigation.
