Two people died in a fiery crash early Monday morning while attempting to flee from police during a traffic stop in San Marcos.
Just before 3 a.m. Monday, officers attempted to stop a motorist suspected of driving impaired, the San Marcos Police Department said in a statement. The driver fled police at high speed in the Rio Vista neighborhood, a residential area with numerous homes.
Police said the driver failed to negotiate the roundabout located at the Cheatham and Rio Vista streets intersection, and struck the landscaping in the center of the roundabout.
The collision caused the vehicle to burst into flames, and both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have identified the passenger of the vehicle as Charles Lee Crayton, 43, of San Marcos. The driver has not been identified at this time and an autopsy is pending, according to the statement.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and members of the police department’s collision investigation team have begun reconstructing the wreck.
