It was a long series of games that the Lady Lobos put their hearts into Tuesday night – playing both San Marcos Lady Rattlers and the Crockett Lady Cougars.
The Rattlers came out of their first pool play match, beating Crockett 3-0, to dominate the Lobos in the second match.
The Rattler size was too much for Lehman and they finished of the Lady Lobos in three games.
The game of the night was saved for the end as the Lady Lobos faced off with the Lady Cougars from Crockett.
Lehman’s Janna Del Bosque got things started in game one with two service aces to help the Lady Lobos on their way to a 15-8 lead. Two huge blocks in a row from Natalia Barajas gave the Lady Lobos a 20-13 lead after she made two blocks in a row at the net.
It appeared Lehman was in control until the Lady Cougars mounted a comeback. They closed out the game on an 11-2 run and stole game one with a score of 25-23.
Lehman got out to a 4-0 lead in game two thanks to Twyla Garcia, who played big at the net for the Lady Lobos with an early block and a big kill. The service game from Angel Cruz and Ofelia Negrete helped give the Lady Lobos a 19-11 lead, and once again they appeared to be in control of the game.
Just like in game one, however, Crockett began to battle back, and eventually regained the lead 24-23 and faced game-point.
Lehman was not going to let this one slip away though, and after both teams faced game-point, the Lady Lobos finished it off after kills from Del Bosque and Keyana Burkley, taking game two 27-25.
Garcia set the tone early in game three for the Lady Lobos with a huge block at the net, followed by a kill. Garcia added three aces of her own which gave Lehman game-point at 24-22.
The Lady Cougars were not going out that easily. Three points in a row and they faced their own game-point. Lehman continued to fight and thanks to kills from Garcia and Barajas, the Lady Lobos were able to hang on to win game three 27-25.
Lehman was in control of game four from the start. Kills from Garcia, Burkley, and Kali Palomarez gave the Lady Lobos a chance to close out the match at 24-18. However, just as they had done before, Crockett continued to fight and scored eight straight points to take game four right out of the Lady Lobos hands.
In the decisive game five, the Lady Lobos got out to a fast start and after a block at the net by Cheyenne Morgan, found themselves with another match point at 14-7. The Lady Cougars stormed back once more with six straight points, but Lehman held on in the end and got the win 15-13.
Coach Megan Cooper was excited and relieved they came out with a win, but said she was “terrified and happy” that her young team got the opportunity to prove they could get it done when it counted.
