Johnnie Green, the Lehman High Lobo Band’s assistant band director — and coordinator of the State Finalist Lehman Color Guard — is in his final days of enjoying the notoriety of having been named a National Quarterfinalist for the second annual Music Educator Award. The award is presented by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. That notoriety really won’t ever fade away, but there’s heightened anticipation now as Green waits for this month’s announcement of the National Semifinalists for the prestigious award. Green is one of only 222 music teachers from across the nation, eleven of them in Texas, to be named a Quarterfinalist.
According to press materials released by the GRAMMY Foundation, more than 7,000 nominations were submitted this year from all fifty states. Green is in the running for an award that was established “to recognize current educators – kindergarten through college, public and private schools – who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to their broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools.”
Anyone who’s ever attended and observed a Lehman High Lobo Marching Band practice or lingered around the Lobo Color Guard’s workouts recognizes the strong presence Green lends to Director Joey Lucita’s program. His efforts have helped shape Lehman into the perennial power it is – this year in amped-up 6A competition. He was recognized for his achievement at Monday’s Hays CISD Board of Trustees meeting.
