The Hays Rebel Tennis Team is looking forward to its new district, joining tennis power houses Westlake and Lake Travis.  

“This is probably one of the toughest districts in Central Texas, but we are ready to work hard and meet the challenge head-on,” head coach Debbie Cook said.  

The Rebels return most of last year’s team and will be led by senior captains, Haley Butler and Ryan New. Also returning is a strong group of seniors,  Sean Farrell, Sabrina Smith, Zack Curry, Devin Knedlik.  They welcome a group of  freshmen who will gain experience by working with the upper classmen.  

Before school even started, the Rebel tennis team took on Austin High and Anderson High School as the first matches in the new district schedule.  The Rebels fought hard, but came up short in these matches.  

“Both of these teams are very strong,  as we expected in this new district.  We have just got to keep working hard and moving our games forward,” Cook said.

The Rebels next pulled out a victory of 10-9 against Converse Judson.  

“This was a team effort  – every match counted towards the win.  I am very proud of all of our players,” Cook said.

As the season progressed, the Rebels gained victories over Akins, Del Valle and Lehman. Mother Nature brought much needed rain, but forced the cancellation of the Rebels’ weekend matches against Killeen and San Antonio Southwest. 

The Rebels next take on Bowie High School and Dripping Springs in their upcoming matches.  

“We like playing these tougher schools, as that is what will make us a better team,” Cook said.
