Garold David Zander of Buda died on Sept. 20, 2014, at The University of Texas Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas, after a lengthy illness. He was sixty-five years old.
Born March 4, 1949, in Waterloo, Iowa, Garold was the son of Arnold and Mary Ellen Hicks Zander. He was baptized and confirmed at Crane Creek Lutheran Church in rural Tripoli, Iowa. He graduated from Tripoli High School in 1967, from Wartburg College in 1971, from Hawkeye Institute of Technology in 1985, and completed a Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1996.
He was united in marriage with Margaret Huber Olson in 1977 in Charles City, Iowa. They resided in Denver, Iowa and were members of St. John Maxfield Lutheran Church in rural Denver.
Garold retired from Deere and Company, Waterloo, Iowa in 2007 after working thirty years building row crop tractors. He was also keenly interested in agriculture and family farming, wood working, politics and history. He loved all sports, boating and fishing.
He played football and wrestled in both high school and college. He owned and operated Zander Comfort Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration for twenty- five years until moving to Buda, Texas, in 2010 where he resided until his death. Garold was a member of Living Word Lutheran Church.
In addition to his wife, Margaret, of Buda, Garold is survived by his daughter, Alicia Lenore Zander (Dr. Adolfo Valadez), of Austin. There are two grandchildren, Alejandro and Elena. He is also survived by siblings Robert (Linda) Sanders, Alta Loma, California; Karla Patterson, Blue Grass, Iowa; Paul (Carol) Zander, Mt. Auburn, Iowa; Susanne Kretzschmar-Cowell (Richard), of Oxford, Iowa; Carl (Carol) Zander and Patricia Zander Hubing (Mark) of Iowa City, Iowa, numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters- in- laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Mary Ellen Zander, a brother Lloyd (Julianne) Zander, his grandparents, Ellen and Lucian Hicks, and Caroline and Henry Zander.
Services were held at Living Word Lutheran Church in Buda, on September 29, 2014. A celebration of life is planned for Oct. 18, 2014 in Denver, Iowa.
