Students from the Kyle Area Youth Advisory Council (KAYAC) joined State Representative Jason Isaac (R-Dripping Springs) to file a bill that will prohibit the sale and use of nicotine products to minors. This is the first bill for Rep. Isaac to file for the upcoming 84th Legislative Session.
“While meeting with KAYAC in May 2014, I was shocked to learn that the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors is not currently illegal in the State of Texas, and I think a lot of people may be unaware of this issue as well,” said Rep. Isaac. “This isn’t just a device for kids to use nicotine but also other controlled substances.”
KAYAC is a committee of high school students from ninth to twelfth grade from the Kyle area who provide a youthful point of view on community issues to the Kyle City Council. KAYAC voiced its concerns, and asked Rep. Isaac to file legislation after noticing the use of e-cigarettes on campuses at local schools. In June 2014, The City of Kyle adopted an ordinance banning the sale and possession of electronic cigarettes to minors.
“Currently, a 10-year-old can walk into a store and legally buy a device that contains some of the same harmful chemicals as a regular cigarette.” Rep. Isaac continued, “Nicotine is a drug regulated by the Federal Government, but they have failed to act in protecting our children from electronic devices that deliver nicotine, and once again it’s time Texas leads. It is only common sense that we prohibit the sale and use of all nicotine related products to minors.”
Rep. Isaac concluded, “I’m thankful for the suggestion from the students of KAYAC and the outpouring of support from parents in the district that we get this legislation passed. This is another great idea that came from concerned constituents and I am so glad to be able to work together to make this important change.”
