Free shredding, recycling at Manchaca UMC
As part of its EcoFaith Initiative, Manchaca United Methodist Church (UMC) Associate Pastor Tracey Beadle said the committee wanted to focus on ways to raise awareness in the community about caring for creation.
One initiative is the Community Shredding & Electronic Recycling Day. In addition, people can bring books in good condition to donate to Reading is Fundamental. Books should be for children ages 5-12 and can be in English or Spanish.
“Two-thirds of low-income students don’t own a book,” Beadle said.
Scheduled for this Saturday, Beadle said everyone in the community is welcome to bring their documents for shredding, old electronics for recycling and used books for redistribution.
“We want to educate people and raise awareness about recycling and paper shredding,” she said. “UMC is interested in partnering with other organizations to build community and connect with people who live in and around the church. We want to make a difference in the community and in people’s lives.”
She said the church’s EcoFaith initiative also includes a community garden.
Beyond the Move Realty is sponsoring the paper shredding, which will be performed by Balcones Shred.
Beadle said the company can also provide documentation that items were shredded.
Go Recycle is providing the electronics recycling portion of the event, which takes place from 8 – 11 a.m. in the UMC west parking lot.
