Matias F. Tobias, age 76 was called to Heaven on Monday, July 20, 2015. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, he leaves many broken hearts that only time will heal.
Matias was born on January 11, 1939, to Tereso Tobias Sr. and Jesusa Figueroa on a farm in Uhland. He attended elementary school in Uhland and later attended a middle school in Lockhart. He left school to help his father with farm and field work and continued until his married life where he worked in the custodial field. He was a well-liked custodian at UT Austin, True-Fit Boat Seats, Tom Fairey Equipment, Lockheed, and the City of Lockhart.
Matias met the love of his life, Minerva Palacios of Laredo, Texas, in 1956 while picking cotton in Lubbock. They were married on February 9, 1958, and made their home in the Uhland area. Together they lovingly raised seven children, Matias Jr, Rosa Munoz (husband Mike), Mario (wife Sandra), Sara Mercado (husband Rene), Sam (wife Janie), Yolanda Romo and Rick (girlfriend Jessica).
Known as “Guelo”, he will forever live in the hearts of his fourteen grandchildren who adored him; Camille (husband Ernest), Stefan, Destiny (husband Jeno), Heather, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Karissa (husband Oscar), Nicole, Joshua, Lyanna, Devin, Maximus, Joseph (fiancé Rosario), and Jeriann.
He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; Zachary, Julian, Pheonix, Donovan, Juliana, Sophia, Caden, Maribella, Nevaeh and four on the way.
We want to express deep appreciation to Matthew Connell and Brenda Brown of HealthSense Home Care, to the doctors and staff of Seton Hays, especially Dr. Gomez, Mercedes, Tara, and Ericka, to Sharon Fischer, Rev. Peter, Peggy, and Rachel of Gentiva Hospice for the loving care given to our loved one. Last but not least, to his granddaughter Lyanna Banda for attending to his medical needs during his final days.
“Grief never ends, but it changes. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love.”
